Another killer diseasee is on its way to the UK - African Horse Sickness (AHS). Thus far it has reached Europe, and as it's midge borne, it's closer than you think... In the UK we have sufficient midges of the correct species to support the virus. It was initially transmitted to Europe by imported Zebras. There are several types of this disease - all incurable. Signs of AHS are usually seen in 5-7 days, and the mortality rate is very high: Cardiac form - between 50-70% Mixed form - 80% Pulmonary form - always fatal |

Duke could welll be the largest horse in the country, and is truly a gentle giant. Duke came to us when his owner died unexpectedly, so that he would have a safe and secure home for life. We had to raise a significant amount of money in an extremely short space of time as he was threatened with termination. Thankfully enough money was raised to bring him to the Horse Refuge.
